December 2009 - Week 1

Natalie Biesel has inspired me with all her fabulous photography. As I was preparing the images from this week's entry I started to play around. As you'll see I have a black and white image and I took much more consideration in editing, cropping and adjusting my images. Usually I would just pop my favorites into Photoshop, resize and save. But I have learned a lot from Natalie working on the Light Maps show together. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge and hope you had a wonderful birthday filled with fantastic views, delicious food and beautiful people

DAY 972 12.01.09 - At Drew's house.

Climbed another tree out in the median. It was a difficult entry but once up, I worked my way to the top. Felt really good too. It was a cool night with a full moon and Drew was below looking for kindling.

He didn't stay out long though. By the time I finished climbing and came back inside he already had the flames going.

DAY 973 12.02.09 - Wet Parkour meet-up. I ran from my house to the Waterfront Park. Then Mark, Christian, Jeremy and I ran to the parking garage by the Presbyterian Center.

Soon we got bored of the garage and I noticed the rain had stopped so we hit the nearby courtyard. The lights of the new stadium were drawing me in

so I climbed another tree in the front of the Presbyterian Center and took shots.

One guy was leaving the building and unlocking his bike. He saw us jumping around on stuff and asked if we were part of "that group that takes photos from the tops of things." I asked what group that was, and he started explaining how he had to ask this one guy to get out of the tree, and he was taking pictures. I replied, "Yeah, that was me, and it isn't a group. I just climb trees everyday and take pictures.... And I do parkour too."

DAY 974 12.03.09 - Met up at El Mundo with Drew, Morgan T. and Garett. Had a few margaritas with my spicy bean crispy tacos and was fretting the newly dropped temperature.

(Sorry Drew, didn't whip out the camera till you had already left.)

But the tequila helped and on my way home I climbed another one of the trees next to the steel corrugated studio building behind my house.

DAY 975 12.04.09 - Was making last minute preparations for my origami Christmas ornament sale at the BBC Taproom.

I was frantically drawing my signs and finishing my bourbon barrel light strands and remembered I needed to get a bunch of ones and fives for change. I ran to Kroger, got my change, then ran over beyond the CVS and found a tree off the sidewalk. I scurried up, shot a few shots then raced back down to load up and go.

The sale went well... at least for my first one. Lots of nice responses and I sold 8 of 57. Thanks to all my friends who supported me and bought one. Really appreciate it. I still got plenty left if you're interested.

DAY 976 12.05.09 - Another Parkour meet-up at the Waterfront. Thankfully the sky was clear blue but it was still pretty damn cold. We ran to the playground by the Great Lawn and started trying to make a lava loop. That's where you start at point A and connect a bunch of different obstacles back to that starting point without touching the ground. Mark and I diligently found the quickest method around, forward and backward as Jeremy observed. Many of the obstacles involved swinging from and onto trees. I was going to consider those my tree climbs... but later, near the Belvedere, I climbed down one River Birch

(see I climbed over the white rail and into that close limb, then slid down the trunk)

and up another.

(then I shimmied up the crooked leaning trunk back up to the rail)

Wore me out with all the leg squeezing and shimmying. Good work out though.

DAY 977 12.06.09 - After dinner at the North End Cafe with my parents I needed to climb. So I ventured behind Kaviar Forge

and found a mighty Hackberry tree to overcome. I used all the perfectly protruding hollow knots for most of my first hand and footholds. Then from there, with ingenuity and shear will I made it to the top of the beast.

It was quite the feat and I thought to myself... I get to the tops of trees, that's what I do. I don't hesitate anymore. If I see that there is a possibility, I just go for it. And it feels so damn good when I reach that top. And the view that night was spectacular as well.

I love solving the climbing riddles in the trees.

DAY 978 12.07.09 - Walked to Peterson Street off Frankfort and headed towards Barret Traditional Middle School. Just before I got there my eye was caught by the most beautiful silhouette of a tree. Massive, tall, with branches all the way from the bottom to the top. It was a monster of a Sweetgum with a path seemingly visible. Thankfully it was night, cold and no one was around to deter me. I approached the trunk and the lowest branch was in reach. I got to it thirsty for the climb. I went up methodically and carefully on the slightly damp limbs. They were strong and wide and I had little trouble. Near the top the limbs thinned and I had to use some of my best tricks to get up to the very top. What a view!

Again the Louisville skyline bright in the distance.

I shot and shot and shot and had a smile on my face the whole time. I looked around me and I was so high. I must have been 75 feet up easy. This is one of those memorable trees and climbs that will stick with me. And when someone asks what tree is my favorite, it will rank near the top.

Happy Birthday, Nat... here's a shot of Louisville for you.

November 2009 - Week 4

Have to throw in a bunch of pictures of the nephews. Just too cute. Plus murals, sunsets, football games, high school reunions, and a near disaster with my camera... this week has it all!

And tree climbs, of course.

DAY 963 11.22.09 - Denny's in the morning with the whole family.

Mitchell started to run around under the table.

After breakfast at Denny's I climbed one of my sister's Oaks in her front yard. I have also eyed these in previous visits and never tried but felt it would be difficult. But I found some little finger holds, jumped and found my way up. I avoided the power lines, discovered the tree had been cabled and took pictures as the family watched from below.

Mitchell got a kick out of it.

Hung out with Jason before I left with my parents to head back to KY.

DAY 964 11.23.09 - Started painting a mural for Drew's mom at his Aunt's house. That evening I climbed a smallish tree in the median of the Sycamore Clifton Street intersection.

DAY 965 11.24.09 -Finished the mural and went to Seneca to climb.

I told JoD (Drew's mom) it was pretty serendipitous that her son's friend is an artist who knows trees and has mural painting experience.

In the concrete of the basement leading to the back door, there are tiny cat paw impressions. So JoD wanted a little kitten silhouette next to the door at the end of the paw trail.

Climbed this massive sprawling Oak. I went all over that beast selecting which major leader limb to go up to the top.

I felt like I monkey. I really am getting more and more comfortable even now after all this time. This climb showed me that I am still improving. Movements that I once thought were difficult or scary are now routine and easy. I took pictures at the top and tried to get the sunset but just missed seeing the sun go down.

The park looked pretty still.

Then I shoved my camera back in my side pocket with my phone. I made sure to shove it pretty good so it wouldn't fall out. Then I climbed down feeling really good still about my mobility and fluid motion. Then at a low limb I looked down on the ground and spotted my camera in its orange case. I was alarmed as I didn't remember feeling it come out of my pocket. I crawled out the limb and dropped to the ground. I picked up my camera and took it out. It was damaged!! I walked over to some bleachers and inspected it. It still worked but the buttons at the top had sunk in and stuck within. I repositioned one button and got the camera a little more together but the on/off button was lost within. Luckily I can turn it on with the PLAY button and it shuts off automatically after a few minutes. So really it is completely functional (thank god) and only some cosmetic damage. Still disappointing, but I didn't let it get to me too bad since the climb felt so good and the camera still worked.

I have since fixed my camera so that the on/off button is back where it should be. Besides a little cosmetic damage, it works just like new. Whew!

DAY 966 11.25.09 - Tree at Wilder Elementary while waiting for people to show up for flag football. Charlotte, Drew, Rachel, Garett, Krisjans, and me.

Team Butterscotch, Drew, Rachel and I, lost to the other unnamed team. But we played valiantly.

DAY 967 11.26.09 -Thanksgiving 2009. At my parents' place with just the three of us. Good food but a little uneventful. Played some Dr. Mario on the original Nintendo with my mom and some 8-ball with my dad on the pool table after dinner. Then I went out front and climbed a young Maple. I had climbed it before but wasn't much in the mood to find a new tree. I got to the top and felt better.

Just had a little grey cloud around me that day. The climb helped but not completely.

DAY 968 11.27.09 - Went to Zephyr Gallery to get my prints from the show off the inventory and leave a little farewell note for the members. A good-bye-for-now of sorts. I checked my mail slot and found I had received a letter from the professor who brought her IUS class to hear me talk about my work. She thanked me and shared with me the students' blog entries about the talk. I went to Cherokee Park and Dog Hill and climbed the Cherokee Park: Playground tree and ate an apple and read the responses.

I didn't get through them all because I threw my apple core to the trashcan and it bounced off the top. So I scrambled down and put the core in the can. Then I climbed back up but just went as high as I could and took pictures.

I finished the letter later that day.

DAY 969 11.28.09 - Parkour at Cherokee Park today. I crawled up a fallen trunk near the parking lot off Lexington Road. At the top I dropped down onto a small Hackberry and slid down to the ground.

I guess I should clarify and say it is fallen but leaning.

Then ran to Dog Hill and rolled down the hill. Half way froward then the rest of the way down backward. I was dizzy, layed breathing hard, then crawled on all fours back to the top. Then we went and climbed the playground tree again. Nikki, Jeremy, and Brandon all climbed the tree. Then we went over to another familiar Beech to climb and do some underbars. 10 year high school reunion that night. Strange.

Preparty at Drew's

DAY 970 11.29.09 - Went to brunch with Drew, Mike, and Rachel. After North End I did some shopping with Rachel. After driving all the way over to Unique and seeing that it was closed we drove some back roads near the river and stopped so I could climb. Rachel took pictures of me after failed to follow up into the tree after me. It was kind of a difficult entry.

I went up through the limbs and saw two old birds nests. It was a good tree and I took a few shots myself with my phone.

DAY 971 11.30.09 - Hung out with Rachel in the morning and Charlotte in the afternoon. After leaving Charlotte's I went to Kammerer Middle School and climbed a Maple I have climbed a couple times before near the Ballard baseball field.

The sun was setting and pretty.

November 2009 - Week 3

Took a 2 1/2 day hiking trip in southern Indiana, climbed near a few tennis courts, and went to visit my sister in WV all chronicled below. Enjoy!!

I didn't say much in my entries at the time so I have filled info in with italic captions.

DAY 956 11.15.09 - smallish beech at dusk on KT just before setting up camp, just south of mile marker 34.

Drew was really nice and got up early on a Sunday to drive me to drop off food and water along the KT and then see me off at the Spurgeon Lake Trailhead.

This was one of my favorite spots on the trail. All evergreen trees adding a little green to the landscape and beige tan needles on the forest floor. Softer, quieter, and very peaceful place.

The day was overcast, leaves blanketed the ground making the hike quite noisy and slippery.

Started at noon and did about 11 miles that day.

DAY 957 11.16.09 - small maple at top of hill on KT mile marker 28.

Got up early, packed up, and couldn't find the trail. So I went up and down this huge hill for about an hour before I found the white spot on the tree. A little further down the trail I crossed over this power line swath, which I heard buzzing through the night.

An amazing bulbous growth at least twice my volume.

Made sure to climb earlier in the day before I got too tired.

The difference between the leaf-covered trail and not was slight, but more visible from above.

A winding creek through the knobs and getting dark. Started to look for a place to set up for the night.

17 miles for the day. Set up my hammock with pink ribbons so as not to get shot by the deer hunters. Settled in for another long restorative slumber.

DAY 958 11.17.09 - little tulip poplar at end of KT

Woke up to rain. Packed up and got going around 7:30am. Shoes and socks were soaked through in the first mile. Crappy raincoat soaked through soon after. 11 miles into the day I got to my last food/water drop and changed socks. Those were soaked in a matter of minutes. It was a long wet day, but I didn't have enough dry clothes or any desire to sleep cold and wet. So I pushed it to the end. 17 miles by 3pm, with only a few 5 minute breaks along the way. At least the last 5 miles it stopped raining.

I never took my camera out till the end. Mile 0. So glad to see it... and my truck.

Once I took my pack off I felt like I was floating even though my muscles were completely fatigued and a few strained and sore. I thought I better climb then before I went home and passed out. I climbed a tiny tree and just sat on its little limbs just 8 feet up from the ground.

DAY 959 11.18.09 - Maple in parents' front yard.

Its a staple and I have climbed it MANY times. It's in videos I've made, in a Yancey shoot, and it was the tree I climbed the first time I got sick during this daily climb project. I was living at my parents' at the time and sneaked out from the close watch of my mom and climbed this Maple, having to pause ever few branches from a racing heart and exhaustion. This time I climbed it due to my complete body soreness and fatigue from my long hike. I got to the top and took pictures of my dad fertilizing and the view.

Turkey Vultures

Felt good and gave me a little more energy and stretched my muscles out.

DAY 960 11.19.09 -Maple by the Bubble indoor pool by the reservoir off Frankfort Ave. Love the tennis court shots.

DAY 961 11.20.09 -Oak in my sister's backyard in Bridgeport, WV. There with my parents for an early Thanksgiving and celebration of my nephew Mitchell's 3rd birthday. Brother showed up later that evening.

DAY 962 11.21.09 - Walked to nearby park with my mom. I crawled over an historic concrete bridge.

Then climbed a pokey Oak. My mom didn't want to watch so she circled the parking lot. I went to the top and took pictures. More tennis court shots.

And the people in the courts definitely gave me some looks. If my mom had watched closely she would have noticed my phone fell from my pocket when I had first crawled up the low overhanging limb. Later that evening my bro and I walked back in the dark with a flashlight and found it right away in the leaves.

Mitchell didn't want to blow out the candles. Not sure if he actually knows how to blow yet. Makes more of a hissing noise through his teeth. I did my best to decorate the cake with a Thomas the Fire Engine drawing. No picture 'cause it turned out pretty bad.

Mitchell's little brother Jason watching on. Who knows what the little guy was thinking.

For Mitchell's 3rd year on this earth, I gave him some of my old MatchBox cars. He loves them and started playing with them immediately. Tongue out, laying on the floor. He is also much like me. He likes to line them up in neat rows.

November 2009 - Week 2

This whole week I climbed in the dark at night. I guess when you sleep in late and the sun is down by 6pm, it's difficult to always get in a sunny climb.

Below I quickly discuss taking down my Light Maps show at Zephyr Gallery. If you didn't get a chance to see them, here is a link to 10 of the 14 images. http://biesel.jetastudio.com/project/light-maps-with-artist-todd-smith/ These were the digital photographs shot by Natalie Biesel.

And please check out all the beautiful photography in Natalie's portfolio!

DAY 949 11.08.09 - Large Sweetgum tree where Payne Street curves right and Pope Street starts. I have climbed the other Sweetgum in the front of this vacant building a few times. I have looked at this larger Sweetgum many times and figured I would have to climb onto the roof to crawl into the overhanging limbs. But on this night I solved the beast of a problem with tiny finger holds in little knots. Even with my sore leg I muscled my way in to the limbs and surprised myself. The rest of the way to the top was easy.

It felt so good to actually climb a tree I've been eying for so long.

And to solve the problem in a more challenging way than just climbing the building.

Dropped to the leaf covered lawn and rolled. Then on the walk back ran into Devin and had a nice chat.

DAY 950 11.09.09 - Ate at La Que with my parents. They had picked me up but I wanted to rent a movie from Wild & Woolly and climb a tree so I insisted I would walk home from Baxter. I got The Motorcycle Diaries and then climbed a tree along the fence of the cemetery on Cherokee Road near the Baxter/Broadway intersection. It wasn't a high climb and I almost ran my face into a spider web, but it was a good climb.

DAY 951 11.10.09 - Large tree in the tiniest park ever (Gnadinger) on the corner of Ellison and Reutlinger in Germantown. Garett, Drew and I left the Nach Bar to get some air and for me to climb. We found the large tree and they really wanted to see me climb it even though there was no way I could get into it. So they boosted me up and I was able to get up. Then I went up to the top and they couldn't see me anymore. Some nice shots of Germantown.

DAY 952 11.11.09 - Small tree on large steps of Waterfront Park near Tumbleweed. Another night at Parkour where I took a few minutes to climb and get it out of the way. Afterward I wasn't feeling much more activity and biked back home.

DAY 953 11.12.09 - Went for a jog with Morgan T. and Javier (her mutt) around the Loop of Cherokee. At the end of our jog near the golf course clubhouse I climbed a tall pine tree. It took a couple runs up the trunk to get the first limb and then I went up getting pretty sappy and avoiding the weak, broken and dying limbs. I got the top which had broken off in the wind or ice storm and left a perfect spot for me to stand and see all around me. I had a great view of the Louisville skyline.

Javier was freaking out below, and I didn't want them to wait long so after shooting some shots I made my way back down pretty quickly. Dirty but high.

DAY 954 11.13.09 - Tree in my back alley of my house next to the aluminum corrugated studio behind my house. After some El Mundo and Bourbon at Bourbon Bistro with Drew.

DAY 955 11.14.09 - Took the show down. Took for ever and couldn't have done it without Drew's help. I wrapped the prints while he spackled and painted. Before that I went to Everett Ave in the Highlands to pick up Matt Milewski's extra keys from his friend Meghan so I could borrow some of his camping gear for hiking the Knobstone Trail. After getting the keys I climbed the tree out in front of her Camelot Apartment complex

that had some cool branches, long and gnarly.

Some people saw me as they walked the sidewalks. They didn't seem to care. Others I made sure to be still and try to avoid being seen. I don't know what it is, but I try to judge people by their appearance and determine whether they would be the type to care or not. No problems though and a nice climb. Then after taking down the show Drew and I went to Garett's for his birthday party. Good time but I wanted to get to bed early to get up to start my hike.
